Seventh film adaptation of the classic novel of the same name by James Fenimore Cooper. The white Hawkeye (Daniel Day-Lewis), raised by Indians, struggles with loyalty problems during the British-French war, which also affects his tribe. Moreover, he falls in love with a British officer's daughter (Madeleine Stowe). With an impressive leading role by the astonishingly versatile Day-Lewis (My Beautiful Laundrette, There Will Be Blood), beautiful images by Dante Spinotti and excellent direction by Michael Mann. The film received an Oscar for best sound.
